Anxiety is Normal – Anxiety Disorder is Different!

The route cause of many aliments is clearly in one’s head.    As a hypnotherapist I totally disagree with the practice of treating such conditions as Anxiety and Stress with pharmaceuticals.    

Like all types of medications each have benefits and unwanted side effects.    Our recent experience with the latest pandemic (COVID-19) we have all learned that we must weight- up the advantages and disadvantages of using a medication or vaccine.     If the benefits hugely outweigh the likelihood of undesired side effects then obviously, we would select the most beneficial route.

What is not universally understood is the difference between Anxiety as opposed to Anxiety Disorder. 

  • Anxiety is a normal emotion. It’s your brain’s way of reacting to stress and alerting you of potential danger ahead.

Everyone feels anxious now and then. For example, you may worry when faced with a problem at work, before taking a test, or before making an important decision

  • But Anxiety Disorders are different. They’re a group of mental illnesses that cause constant and overwhelming anxiety and fear.  The excessive anxiety can make you avoid work, school, family get-togethers, and other social situations that might trigger or worsen your symptoms.

There are several types of Anxiety Disorders

  1. Generalized anxiety disorder.
  2. Panic disorder
  3. Social anxiety disorder.
  4. Specific phobias
  5. Agoraphobia.
  6. Separation anxiety
  7. Selective mutism
  8. Medication-induced anxiety disorder

The last of these Anxiety types (8 above) is really telling.  It shows that treatment with drugs is potentially one of making the condition worse.   

Thus, it can be shown that a totally psychological condition can go on to develop into something much worse.    Which may require the use of drugs to contain it to a manageable level.   But note this is not a cure. 

By far better solution would be to treat Anxiety and similar conditions before they become so serious that drug therapy may be required in order to manage it.      

Treat psychological conditions early using only talking therapy or light hypnosis and avoid the use of drugs altogether.
